About

My name is Roman, I am a 31 year old tech enthusiast from Switzerland running a small tech YouTube channel called “TechGuides”. Professionally, I did a PhD in Atmospheric and Climate Science at ETH Zurich.

On this page, I would like to give you some background on my journey from 0 to 50’000 subscribers!

My YouTube adventure started out all the way back in November 2012, when I released my first ever glorious Battlefield 3 commentary. For obvious reasons, I have made this video unlisted ever since. However, as a reminder that we all have to start somehow, I have put it on this page for your amusement 😉

100 Subscribers

Based on my video backlog, I have reached my first big milestone of 100 subscribers on March 22, 2013 after releasing 18 videos! My videos back then primarily consisted of over the top Battlefield 3 gameplay commentary and the occasional other FPS review. Surprisingly, that content was good enough to double the number of subscribers already on April 23!

Battlefield 4 was about to release back in June 2013 and my coverage of the live-streamed reveal event attracted a lot of views.

At the same time, I was in the process of diversifying my channel with Arma 3.

Release of Battlefield 4

By far the most popular video I have ever released was a video that detailed the various severe flaws that Battlefield 4 had. I was furious with the game and could not see me playing it at this state any more. This would mean that releasing content for Battlefield 4 would definitely not spark joy for me and that it was about time to change the direction of my channel.

January 6, 2014 marked my one thousand subscribers milestone video – after releasing just shy of 100 videos, many of which have since been privated. However, You can still check out my 1K special video.

1000 Subscribers

To diversify my channel, I decided to release a video on what where in my opinion the best OBS settings on September 1st 2014. Back then, many streamers would struggle to get a decent 60FPS stream up and running, and I managed this achieve this on a measly 3mbps upstream connection! This video would absolutely go huge and accumulated more than 400’000 views over its entire lifetime. This remains to this date the most watched video on my channel.

Subsequently, I would continue to produce gaming content but dropped the occasional tutorial video in the mix. Because the gaming content simply did not deliver in terms of viewership, I decided to completely change the direction of my channel and fully focus on the production of tutorials. Not many have watched the update video that I have release back then, but I had good faith in my choice and continued down this path regardless.

One and a half year later I have completely change the theme of my channel from gaming to tutorials. This COD Warzone Settings video has accumulated an astonishing 300k views within only one and a half month and will most likely surpass the video mentioned above as the most viewed video!
